Dave Mans on tea-making duties and undercover

We were at a place called Owen Point this morning. It’s odd being in places that feel like they are off the known map of the world, only to hear Mark and Jock talking about these windswept, desolate places by their names. Who was Owen? We rowed 26 nautical miles yesterday. That’s a good row in the conditions. Better still, Tibbs The Weather is forecasting sunnier and less wind for the next few days. We’re looking forward to it.

Whilst we think we had a fairly hard time with gusty wind, we suspect it’s nothing compared to our two trailing boats making their way back to Resolute. They arrived last night making it across the Wellington Channel on their third attempt.

We are now in serious isolation. It’s ups and downs are that we are now the guests of the natural world who seem happy to put on their displays – as the Beluga whales did for us yesterday. On the other side, all of us and glad we have our training, drill and routines for polar bears. The sonic ‘Bear Scarers’ do seem to work well and with a couple of cool headed marksmen in the crew, we’re in good shape.

The early morning routine now seems to include media interviews now. Just when your mind is taking in how remote you are, the phone rings and it’s Radio Cornwall or another TV reporter. It brings you back to everyone else’s reality with a bump. But we love that contact. Six guys bouncing around in here without contact with Richard, one of the operations team in Resolute, or journalists would start to be a bit ‘cabin fevery’. At least Dave Mans makes a very decent cup of tea. It must be his military training.

Well, to the oars and onwards Mr. Wishart. What direction? North?
